How to Train Your Hair 101

Hair training. It sounds complicated, but I’m here to tell you it isn’t! If you want to have beautiful tresses but have no idea how to get it, you’re not alone. Keep reading and learn my top tips to begin training your hair – the Jasmine Rae Way!

Identify Your Washing Schedule

Nobody likes wash day. It is such a pain! But I have some good news for you. You don’t have to wash as much to achieve healthy, beautiful hair! It sounds like an oxymoron right now, but hear me out. I firmly believe that the longer you can stretch out the time between washes, the better!

The first step in hair training is understanding how often you are shampooing. This could be all over the place and might not even be a consistent cycle. You can adjust your routine once you nail down how often you already wash your hair.

Increase the Gap

This part is where your patience will be tested! Once you’ve established your current schedule, you will start increasing the time between washes. Start by adding back one extra day to your routine. For instance, if you are an everyday washer, you will start by shampooing every other day. If you wash it every other day, stretch it to every 3 days. (Sometimes, static becomes a problem between washes. Check out my top 3 tips to fight static)

When your first two weeks are over, guess what? You will do the same process again, but this time, add one more day for another 2 weeks. I love using this scalp massager on wash days to help stimulate the scalp and remove buildup, so you’re starting your next cycle with your best foot forward.

Disclaimer: I’m not telling you not to shower! We are not cavewomen; we are just women on a quest for healthier hair.

So, shower. Please.

Just don’t shampoo.

I love these Kitsch shower caps to help your strands stay dry.

Use Dry Shampoo

Truly a miracle in an aerosol can, dry shampoo is a lifesaver. It helps to absorb all that extra oil, so you can stay looking and smelling fresh. Spray a small amount of dry shampoo on your roots in sections. Keep the can away from your head – otherwise, you’ll get white spots – and spray evenly.

Wait a few minutes, massage the shampoo into your roots, and then brush through your lengths.

I love this Hask chia seed shampoo as my go-to dry shampoo.

"DRY SHAMPOO AND PUSH THROUGH!"

After you dry shampoo, make sure you are brushing! Take a wet or shine brush, run it through your scalp, and push it around. Make sure you are stimulating all those follicles!

Hair Type Makes a Difference

Thin, fine, or sleek brunettes or natural, non-colored haired girls won’t be able to go as long between wash days. These types will end up at max on a 4-5 day wash schedule.

Thicker, coarser textures have the potential to go a lot longer. For example, my hair is bleached, with a coarse texture and thick density. Girls with similar textures and densities can train to go ten days between washes.

Care for Your Hair

Train your hair and cut down on heat with heatless satin curlers

It's especially important to remember that this process doesn’t only involve extending the time between washes, but you must also take care of your beautiful tresses! When you wash, make sure you are just washing your scalp.

Also, make sure you are using nourishing products and replenishing lost moisture. Check the ingredients on your shampoos and conditioners. Look for products that do not contain sulfates or silicones. Try to lessen the number of times you use heat styling tools, or try these heatless curlers.

Skyrocket Your Success

Deja Vu Dry Shampoo – search the L’ange website for this lightweight dry shampoo to use early in the week or if you are a dark-haired beauty. It sprays clear and smells clean while adding volume!

Rock & Ruddle USA Brush – these brushes are a must! They are made with natural boar bristles, which help to spread oil evenly, stimulate your scalp, and encourage growth without tugging on strands. They come in so many cute colors and designs. Plus, they are an affordable alternative to a Pearson Mason hairbrush!

Satin Pillowcases – Tame frizz and reduce breakage while you sleep and train your hair! These pillowcases are amazing to help you along in your journey. They come in standard sizing with so many great colors. Plus, they help improve your skin. That’s a win-win!

Be Patient

Above all, remember that this process requires patience and commitment. It might take a few weeks to notice changes in your texture and oil balance. You might feel frustrated during this time, but don’t give up!

If you stick with it, you can achieve healthy, manageable, beautiful locks. Get some cute hats, or rock a claw clip for when you're pushing through during the process.

Please share your journey with me – I can’t wait to see your hair training progress!
